Arnhem September 1944
About this tour
‘A Bridge too Far’
There was great rivalry between the British and American Generals to be the first across the German border after the D Day landings of 6th June 1944. Montgomery proposed Operation Market Garden to win the race and end the war by Christmas. Firstly, an airborne carpet of British and American paratroopers was deployed to seize and hold the bridges over the rivers.
Then Horrocks XXX Corps, supported by tanks and aircraft were sent across those bridges and along ‘Hell's Highway’ for a 60-mile dash to the town of Arnhem on the river Rhine. It almost worked but the ground troops could not reach Arnhem in time. The British forces there were gradually pushed back over the Rhine, captured, or killed. The tour follows ‘Hells Highway’ to Arnhem.
